175 years Lindt & Sprüngli
39 Creation — 175 years of chocolate history The Lindor Code A TRUFFLE THAT MAKES EVERYONE MELT Originally developed for the festive Christmas period, the Lindor truffle now melts the hearts of chocolate lovers all over the world throughout the year. The Lindt&Sprüngli anniversary is the perfect time to reflect on this unbelievable success story. For more than 70 years, Lindor has been on every- one’s lips and a very special experience for all senses: its rustling, glossy paper, the anticipation, the hard chocolate shell, and finally the pleasure of the cool- ing and incredibly smooth-melting filling. Such a unique and fine product could only be equated to gold, so the Lindt Master Chocolatiers gave the ex- quisite chocolate creation the name “Lindor,” made up of “Lindt” and “or”, the French word for gold. In the boom years following the Second World War, Lindt Master Chocolatiers were tasked with inventing a completely new chocolate bar with an unprecedented taste experience. In 1949, the mo- ment had finally arrived and the exact recipe was found for a chocolate that, with its delicate melt and mysterious filling, outshone all chocolate varieties available until that point. The luxurious Lindor came into the shops in the form of a bar and caused a great deal of excitement among consumers. It was not until 20 years after the invention of the Lindor chocolate bar that the ball started rolling – the Lindor truffle was invented. Originally intended as a tree decoration for Christmas time, the Lindt truffle is now very popular all over the world throughout the year and is available in almost 30 dif- ferent flavors. The classic “Milk” is still the most pop- ular Lindor truffle, closely followed by the traditional “white”, “60% cocoa”, and “noisette” flavors. With passion and a keen intuition for trends, the Lindt Master Chocolatiers are constantly creating new, country-specific varieties. For example, people in the US love Lindor truffles with a caramel, pepper- mint, or pecan filling, which reflect their preferences, or seasonal flavors such as “Milk Peppermint Cook- ies”, “Fudge Swirl”, or “Gingerbread Spice”. Even after more than 70 years, the Lindor truffle is and remains one of the most successful chocolate creations for Lindt&Sprüngli. The original Lindor “Milk” recipe has remained almost unchanged to date and is one of the best-kept secrets of the Lindt Master Chocolatiers.
