175 years Lindt & Sprüngli

Lindt &Sprüngli is not the same as Sprüngli Until shortly before the end of the 19th century, Sprüngli was a small chocolate factory in Horgen and a patisserie on both Marktgasse and what is now known as Paradeplatz in Zurich. When Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann regulated the succession with a division agreement, he laid the foundation stone for the two independent companies “Sprüngli” and “Lindt&Sprüngli”. His son Johann Rudolf Sprüngli-Schifferli acquired the chocolate factory, and his other son David Robert Sprüngli-Baud got the headquarters on Marktgasse and the patisserie on Paradeplatz. Rudolf Sprüngli-Schifferli expanded his chocolate factory and built a new, larger one in Kilchberg in 1899. One year later, the “Chocolat Sprüngli Aktiengesellschaft” took over Lindt’s conching process and the brand. The name was changed to “Aktiengesellschaft Vereinigte Berner & Zürcher Chocoladenfabriken Lindt&Sprüngli”. From then on, the two world-renowned, independent companies “Sprüngli” and “Lindt&Sprüngli” would officially exist.
